Just as Joshua and Caleb held both that the Promised Land was good and beautiful and that its possession would be sweet and agreeable, so too the Holy Spirit by the mouths of all the saints and our Lord by his own mouth assures us that a devout life is a life that is sweet, happy, and loveable.
-St. Francis de Sales
The temple of the spirit is raised through work and suffering; and I would add that suffering counts for more than work.
-St. Anthony Mary Claret
Prayer for the Faithful
May the Strength of God guide us.
May the Power of God preserve us.
May the Wisdom of God instruct us.
May the Hand of God protect us.
May the Way of God direct us.
May the Shield of God defend us.
May the Angels of God guard us.
—Against the snares of the evil one.
May Christ be with us!
May Christ be before us!
May Christ be in us,
Christ be over all!
May Thy Grace, Lord,
Always be ours,
This day, O Lord, and forevermore.
…I came to know his anguished soul. This crucified soul resembles the Savior. Where he expects, with good reason, to find consolation, he finds the cross. He lives among many friends, but has no one but Jesus. This is how God strips the soul He especially loves.
-St. Faustina Kowalska
Let us take courage at the consoling thought that, after the climb to Calvary, we will ascend even higher, without any effort on our part, to the holy mount of God, the heavenly Jerusalem.
-St. Pio of Pietrelcina
Prayer for Vocations
Lord, You told us that “The harvest indeed is great but the laborers are few. Pray, therefore, the Lord of the harvest to send Laborers into His fields.” We ask You to strengthen us as we follow the vocation to which You have called us. We pray particularly for those called to serve as priests, sisters, brothers, and deacons:
Those whom You have called,
Those You are calling now,
Those You will call in the future.
May they be open and responsive to the call of serving Your people. We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
It was God’s will that I should leave everything that was near and dear to me. I thank him for having called me to religious life where I have found such peace and joy as I could never have found in the world. My plan of life is chiefly this: to love and suffer, always meditating upon, adoring and admiring God’s unspeakable love for his lowliest creatures.
-St. Conrad of Parzham
Prayer for Priests
Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Jesus, who is the eternal High Priest, and have pity on Your priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation. Keep them close to You so the enemy may not prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.
O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests, for the unfaithful and tepid ones; for those laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields; for those who are tempted; for those who are lonely and desolate; for those who are young; for those who are dying; and for those who are in Purgatory.
But, above all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed or helped me and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, particularly (your priest’s name here). O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity.
Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many and holy priests.
Just as the Lamb had to be killed to be raised upon the throne of glory, so the path to glory leads through suffering and the cross for everyone chosen to attend the marriage supper of the Lamb. All who want to be married to the Lamb must allow themselves to be fastened to the cross with him. Everyone marked by the blood of the Lamb is called to this, and that means all the baptized.
-St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross
Prayer for Christian Unity
Let us pray for all our brothers and sisters who share our faith in Jesus Christ, that God may gather and keep together in one Church all those who seek the truth with sincerity.
Almighty and eternal God, you keep together those you have united. Look kindly on all who follow Jesus, your Son. We are all consecrated to you by our common Baptism. Make us one in the fullness of faith, and keep us one in the fellowship of love.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
God wishes to test you like gold in the furnace. The dross is consumed by the fire, but the pure gold remains and its value increases. It is in this manner that God acts with his good servant, who puts his hope in him and remains unshaken in times of distress. God raises him up, and in return for what he has given up out of love for God, he is repaid a hundredfold in this life and with eternal life hereafter.
-St. Jerome Emiliani
Do not think that your present state is a punishment from heaven, because you would be wrong, but be certain that your present state is willed by God for the salvation of your soul.
-St. Pio of Pietrelcina
I Know That My Redeemer Lives
I know that my Redeemer lives, and on that final day of days, his voice shall bid me rise again: unending joy, unceasing praise!
This hope I cherish in my heart: to stand on earth, my flesh restored, and, not a stranger but a friend, behold my Savior and my Lord.
God, being admirable in all His works, will be so too when He recompenses the good Christians who have made all their happiness consist in the possession of Heaven. This possession contains all good, and excludes all evil; sin being far from Heaven, all the pains and miseries which are the consequences of sin are also banished from it. No more death! The good God will be in us the Principle of everlasting life. No more sickness, no more sadness, no more pains, no more grief. You who are afflicted, rejoice! Your fears and your weeping will not extend beyond the grave….The good God will Himself wipe away your tears!
-St. John Vianney
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia:
for the Son you were privileged to bear, alleluia,
is risen as he said, alleluia.
Pray for us to God, alleluia.
Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia!
For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia!
Let us pray. O God, who gave joy to the world through the Resurrection of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant, we beseech You, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord.
Oh, how much I desire to be set free from the bonds of this body. O my Jesus, You know that, in all my desires, I always want to see Your will. Of myself, I would not want to die on minute sooner, or to live one minute longer, or to suffer less, or to suffer more, but I only want to do Your holy will. Although I have great enthusiasm, and the desires burning in my heart are immense, they are never above Your will.
-St. Faustina Kowalska
Prayer of Adoration and Petition
I adore You, O Jesus, true God and true Man, here present in the Holy Eucharist, as I humbly kneel before You and unite myself in spirit with all the faithful on earth and all the Saints in heaven. In heartfelt gratitude for so great a blessing, I love You, my Jesus, with my whole soul, for You are infinitely perfect and all worthy of my love. Give me the grace nevermore in any way to offend You. Grant that I may be renewed by Your Eucharistic presence here on earth and be found worthy to arrive with Mary at the enjoyment of Your eternal and blessed presence in heaven.
There is no evil to be faced that Christ does not face with us. There is no enemy that Christ has not already conquered. There is no cross to bear that Christ has not already borne for us, and does not now bear with us. And on the far side of every cross we find the newness of life in the Holy Spirit, that new life which will reach its fulfillment in the resurrection. This is our faith. This is our witness before the world.
-St. John Paul II
Our Lady of Lourdes
O Immaculate Virgin Mary, you are the refuge of sinners, the health of the sick, and the comfort of the afflicted. By appearing at the Grotto of Lourdes you made it a privileged sanctuary where your favors are given to people streaming to it from the whole world. Over the years countless sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities—whether of soul, mind, or body.
Therefore I come with limitless confidence to implore your motherly intercession. Loving Mother, obtain the grant of my requests. Let me strive to imitate your virtues on earth so that I may one day share your glory in heaven.
My God, although my sufferings are great and protracted, I accept them from Your hands as magnificent gifts. I accept them all, even the ones that other souls have refused to accept. You can come to me with everything, my Jesus; I will refuse You nothing. I ask You for only one thing: give me the strength to endure them and grant that they may be meritorious. Here is my whole being; do with me as You please.
-St. Faustina Kowalska
Prayer for Those who Care for the Sick
Lord Jesus, our brother, you showed your compassion for the sick when you reached out in love of them. We praise you for the saving love that is exercised among those who care fore the sick. Conform them more and more to your image, that they may be your healing touch to the sick, and share the peace of your Holy Spirit with all they meet.
Glory and praise to you, Christ Jesus, the Incarnation of the Father’s love, you are Lord forever and ever.
She [the Church] sees the Father’s only Son carrying his cross. She sees the Lord of majesty struck and spat upon. She sees the Author of life and glory transfixed by nails, wounded by a lance, smeared with abuse, and finally laying down his precious life for his friends. She sees these things, and the sword of love pierces her soul more deeply, and she says, “Surround me with flowers, pile up apples around me, for I am sick with love” (Song of Sgs. 2:5).
-St. Bernard of Clairvaux
Prayer for the Church in Need
God of power and of mercy, you gave courage to the martyrs who died for their faith. In many places in the world, our brothers and sisters in Christ continue to suffer for their belief in you and in your Son. Strengthen all those who suffer religious persecution. May we work for the day when all your children may worship you in freedom and in joy.
