August 21 St. Pius X

It would not be difficult for Him to free us at once from all tribulation and sorrow, but instead He permits His friends to suffer much in this world that instead He may crown them all the more gloriously in Heaven, and make them more like his only begotten son, who never ceased to do good and to suffer injury while he was on earth that He might teach us patience by his example.

-St. Robert Bellarmine

Prayer of Confidence in the Immaculate Heart

Mary Immaculate, our Mother and Consolation, with confidence I take refuge in your most loving heart. You shall be the dearest object of my love and veneration. I shall always have recourse to you who are the dispenser of the treasure of heaven, that I may have peace in my sorrows, light in my doubts, protection in dangers, and help in all my needs.

Be therefore my refuge, strength, and consolation, O Mary the Consoler. At the hour of my death, graciously received the last sighs of my heart and obtain for me a place in your heavenly home, where all hearts will praise with one accord the adorable Heart of Jesus as well as your most lovable heart forever. Our tender Mother, Comforter of the afflicted, pray for us who have recourse to you.

August 20 St. Bernard of Clairvaux

Ah! I assure you that without the Blessed Sacrament and the cross I could not live, nor could I bear the length of my exile in this valley of tears, where I have never wished to see my sufferings diminish. The more overwhelmed my body was, the more my spirit rejoiced and was at liberty to be occupied with and united to my suffering Jesus, for I had not greater desire than to make of myself a true and perfect copy and representation of my Jesus Crucified.

-St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament

O Virgin Mary, our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament, you are the glory of the Christian people, the joy of the universal Church, and the salvation of the whole world. Pray for us, and awaken in all believers a vibrant devotion for the most Holy Eucharist, so that they may be worthy to partake daily of this holy Sacrament of the Altar.

August 19 St. John Eudes

My mother is very strange; if I bring her flowers, she says she does not want them; if I bring her cherries, she will not take them, and if I then ask her what she desires, she replies: “I desire thy heart, for I live on hearts.”

-St. Joseph of Copperino

True devotion to our Lady is interior; that is to say, it comes from the spirit and the heart.

-St. Louis de Montfort

Prayer of Consecration to Mary

O my Queen and Mother, I give myself entirely to you. To show my devotion to you I consecrate to you this day my eyes, ears, mouth, heart, and whole being without reserve.

Therefore, good Mother, since I am your own, keep me and guard me as your proper and possession.

August 18 St. Louis of Toulouse

May the most holy Virgin obtain for us love of the cross…and may she who was first to practice the Gospel in all its perfection before it was written, enable us and stimulate us to follow her example.

-St. Pio of Pietrelcina

I pray God may open your eyes and let you see what hidden treasures he bestows on us in the trials from which the world thinks only to flee.

-St. John of Avila

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke your most powerful name, which is the safeguard of the living and the salvation of the dying. O Purest Mary, let your name henceforth be ever on my lips. Whenever I call on you by name or even think of you, what consolation and confidence, what sweetness and emotion fill my soul!

I thank God for having given you so sweet, powerful, and lovely a name for my good. Let my love for you prompt me ever to greet you as Mother of Perpetual Help.

August 17 St. Joan of the Cross

“…they glory, through My Name, in bearing much tribulation. In bearing tribulation they find pleasure, and not having it they suffer pain, fearing that I reward not their well-doing or that the sacrifice of their desires is not pleasing to Me; but when I permit to them many tribulations they rejoice, seeing themselves clothed with the suffering and shame of Christ crucified. Wherefore were it possible for them to have virtue without toil they would not want it. They would rather delight in the Cross, with Christ, acquiring it with pain, than in any other way obtain Eternal Life. Why? Because they are inflamed and steeped in the Blood, where they find the blaze of My charity…”

-St. Catherine of Siena

Prayer of Offering of the Precious Blood

Eternal Father, You have given Your only Son to be the Redeemer of the world and willed that He should shed—even to the last drop—His Precious Blood for love of all persons.

I offer You the effusion of the Precious Blood, which flowed beneath the knife of circumcision, which watered the Garden of Olives, which flooded the praetorium and streets of Jerusalem, which was shed in torrents at the Crucifixion, and Whose last drops reddened the steel of the lance.

In the name of this adorable Blood, grant to sinners the grace of salvation, to the just an increase of love, and to all human beings a large share in the merits that It has assured us. Pardon us in the name of this Divine Blood. Heed Its pleading voice. Remember that It is the Blood of Your Son in Whose Name You have promised to hear our every prayer.

August 16 St. Stephen of Hungary

Jesus, You see that I am neither gravely ill nor in good health. You fill my soul with enthusiasm for action, and I have no strength. The fire of Your love burns in me, and for what I cannot accomplish by physical strength, love will compensate.

-St. Faustina Kowalska

O most merciful heart of my Jesus, accept each of my tears, every cry of pain, as a plea for those who suffer, for those who weep, for those who forget you.

-St. Bernadette Soubirous

Salve, Regina

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy: Hail, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

August 15 The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

As Paul the Apostle says: “We know that our home is in heaven, where we also await our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior, who will change our vile body that it may be fashioned like his magnificent body “ (Phil. 3:20-21).  Holy Mary has already reached her heavenly home, and after exile on earth gained entrance immediately to glory. So, let your sufferings, your anxieties, your hopes be directed toward her, that her help in joining her after this exile on earth will not fail.

-St. John Paul II

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to your protection, implored your help, and sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother, to you do I come, before you I stand sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me.

August 14 St. Maximilian Kolbe

The Immaculate alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. She seeks souls that will consecrate themselves entirely to her, that will become in her hands forceful instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spread of God’s kingdom.

-St. Maximilian Kolbe

Novena to the Assumption

August 13 Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners

Yet I realize as never before that the Lord is gentle and merciful; He did not send me this heavy cross until I could bear it. If He had sent it before, I am certain that it would have discouraged me, but now it merely takes from me any natural satisfaction I might feel in longing for Heaven.

-St. Therese of Lisieux

O Jesus and Mary, let my entire consolation in this world be to love you and to suffer for sinners.

-St. Bernadette Soubirous

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.

Novena to the Assumption

August 12 St. Jane Frances de Chantal

Today after Holy Communion, I heard a voice in my soul: My daughter, stand ready, for I will come unexpectedly. Jesus, You do not want to tell me the hour I am looking forward to with such longing? My daughter, it is for your own good. You will learn it, but not now; keep watch. O Jesus, do with me as You please. I know You are the merciful Savior and You will not change towards me at the hour of my death. If at this time, you are showing me so much special love, and are condescending to unite Yourself with me in such an intimate way and with such great kindness, I expect even more at the hour of my death.

-St. Faustina Kowalska

Prayer to St. Joseph

O blessed Joseph, faithful guardian of my Redeemer, Jesus Christ, protector of thy chaste spouse, the virgin Mother of God, I choose thee this day to be my special patron and advocate and I firmly resolve to honor thee all the days of my life. Therefore I humbly beseech thee to receive me as thy client, to instruct me in every doubt, to comfort me in every affliction, to obtain for me and for all the knowledge and love of the Heart of Jesus, and finally to defend and protect me at the hour of my death.
