June 30 The First Holy Martyrs

My heart beat violently as I pressed my lips to the dust once reddened with the blood of the early Christians, and I asked the grace to be a martyr too for Jesus. At the bottom of my heart I felt that I was heard.

-St. Therese of Lisieux

Prayer for the Church in Need

God of power and of mercy, you gave courage to the martyrs who died for their faith. In many places in the world, our brothers and sisters in Christ continue to suffer for their belief in you and in your Son. Strengthen all those who suffer religious persecution. May we work for the day when all your children may worship you in freedom and in joy.

Amen.

Prayer for the Protection of the Church

O glorious Saint Michael, guardian and defender of the Church of Jesus Christ, come to the assistance of the Church, against which the powers of hell are unchained, guard with especial care her august Head, and obtain that for him and for us the hour of triumph may speedily arrive.

O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, watch over us during life, defending us against assaults of the demon, assists us especially at the hour of death; obtain for us a favorable judgment, and the happiness of beholding God face to Face for endless ages.

Amen.

Litany of the Saints

June 29 Sts. Peter and Paul

The divine Master commanded Saint Peter to walk on the waters. And when Saint Peter heard the wind blowing and saw the dangerous storm, he was afraid, and this fear almost submerged him. So he asked the Master’s help, and Jesus reprimanded him, saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” And holding out his hand to him, the master assured him.

– St. Pio of Pietrelcina

“Bear your share of the hardship which the Gospel entails,” writes Paul to Timothy in today’s Second Reading (2 Tim 1:8). This is not idle exhortation to endurance. No, it is an invitation to enter more deeply into the Christian vocation which belongs to us all by Baptism.

-St. John Paul II

Prayer for the Pope

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd Francis a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your Church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever.

Amen.

Litany of the Saints

June 28 St. Irenaeus

My Good Shepherd, who have shown Your very gentle mercy to us unworthy sinners in various physical pains and sufferings, give grace and strength to me, Your little lamb, that in no tribulation or anguish or pain may I turn away from you.

-St. Francis of Assisi

Let us always worship and bless the almighty hand of God. It strikes only to heal us and make us see the emptiness of the things in this valley of tears where we are only passing through.

-St. Bernadette Soubirous

Prayer for Perseverance

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and life-giving fountain of eternal life, infinite treasure of the Divinity, and glowing furnace of love, You are my refuge and my sanctuary. O adorable and glorious Savior, consume my heart with the burning fire that ever inflames Your Heart. Pour down on my soul the graces that flow from Your love. Let my heart be so united with Yours that our wills may be one, and mine may in all things be conformed to Yours. May Your Will be the rule both of my desires and of my actions.

Amen.

Litany of the Saints

June 27 Our Lady of Perpetual Help

O Mary, today a terrible sword has pierced Your holy soul. Except for God, no one knows of your suffering. Your soul does not break; it is brave, because it is only then that I will be able to endure all trials and tribulations, and only in union with Jesus will my little sacrifices be pleasing to God. Sweetest Mother, continue to teach me about the interior life. May the sword of suffering never break me. O pure Virgin, pour courage into my heart and guard it.

-St. Faustina Kowalska

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant that I may ever invoke your most powerful name, which is the safeguard of the living and the salvation of the dying. O Purest Mary, let your name henceforth be ever on my lips. Whenever I call on you by name or even think of you, what consolation and confidence, what sweetness and emotion fill my soul!

I thank God for having given you so sweet, powerful, and lovely a name for my good. Let my love for you prompt me ever to greet you as Mother of Perpetual Help.

Amen.

Litany of the Saints

June 26 St. Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer

Legions of Christian faithful fulfill an ecclesial role of inestimable value by praying for the Church and her mission. We count on all these prayers, and are especially grateful for the contributions of the sick and the suffering.

-St. John Paul II

On one occasion I heard these words in my soul, Make a novena for your country. This novena will consist of the recitation of the Litany of the Saints.

-St. Faustina Kowalska

Prayer for the Church in Need

Litany of the Saints

June 25 St. Moloc

Jesus, how truly dreadful it would be to suffer if it were not for You. But it is You, Jesus, stretched out on the cross, who give me strength and are always close to the suffering soul. Creatures will abandon a person in his suffering, but You, O Lord, are faithful…

-St. Faustina Kowalska

Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory

Lord Jesus, have mercy on the souls detained in Purgatory. It was for their salvation that you took on our human nature and suffered a most painful death. Have mercy on their burning desire to see you, have mercy on their tears of repentance. Through the merits of your Passion, remit the sentence they incurred by their sins.

Dear loving Jesus, may your Blood descend on those dear souls! May it shorten their time of atonement and may they soon be called to eternal happiness in your Presence!

Amen.

June 24 Nativity of St. John the Baptist

I travel, work, suffer my weak health, meet with a thousand difficulties, but all these are nothing, for this world is so small. To me, space is an imperceptible object, as I am accustomed to dwell in eternity.

-St. Francis Xavier Cabrini

Always be resigned in all the misfortunes of this life. You know well that God reserves his children for a future life and that for the present he usually grants nothing to his chosen ones except the honor of tolerating a great deal and carrying their cross after him.

-St. Pio of Pietrelcina

Magnificat

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed:
the Almighty has done great things for me
and holy is His Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,
and has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel
for He has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.

June 23 The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests

On one occasion, while the Blessed Sacrament was exposed, feeling wholly withdrawn within myself by an extraordinary recollection of all my senses and powers, Jesus Christ, my sweet Master, presented Himself to me, all resplendent with glory, His Five Wounds shining like so many suns. Flames issued from every part of His Sacred Humanity, especially from His Adorable Breast, which resembled an open furnace and disclosed to me His most loving and most amiable Heart, which was the living source of these flames. It was then that He made known to me the ineffable marvels of His pure love and showed me to what an excess He had loved men, from who He received only ingratitude and contempt.

-St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, filled with infinite love, accept the consecration that I make to You of all that I am and all that I have. Take my body, my mind, my heart, and my soul. Draw me, day by day, ever nearer to Your Sacred Heart.

Amen.

Prayer for Priests

Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Jesus, who is the eternal High Priest, and have pity on Your priests. Remember, O most compassionate God, that they are but weak and frail human beings. Stir up in them the grace of their vocation. Keep them close to You so the enemy may not prevail against them, so that they may never do anything in the slightest degree unworthy of their sublime vocation.

O Jesus, I pray for Your faithful and fervent priests, for the unfaithful and tepid ones; for those laboring at home and abroad in distant mission fields; for those who are tempted; for those who are lonely and desolate; for those who are young; for those who are dying; and for those who are in Purgatory.

But, above all, I recommend to You the priests dearest to me; the priest who baptized me; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed or helped me and encouraged me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way, particularly (your priest’s name here). O Jesus, keep them all close to Your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity.

Amen.

Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us many and holy priests.

Amen.

June 22 St. Thomas More

I suffer. My comforter, my moans rise up to you without ceasing. It is in your most Adorable Heart that I shed my tears. It is to your heart that I confide my sighs and my anguish. I unite my sufferings with yours. My Jesus, sanctify them through this holy union. Let this union make them sweeter and lighter and let me grow in love.

-St. Bernadette Soubirous

Prayer to Imitate the Suffering Christ

O Jesus, You have called me to suffer because You on Your part suffered for me, leaving me an example that I might follow. When You were insulted, You did not return the insult. When You were mistreated, You did not counter with threats but entrusted Yourself to the One Who judges justly. By Your wounds we are healed. Help me to imitate You in suffering. Let me break with sin by means of my sufferings, so that I may no longer live according to the lusts of sinners but according to the Will of the Father.

Since You Yourself have suffered and been tempted I know that You are able to bring aid to all who suffer and are tempted. I entrust myself to You and to the Father, my Creator, knowing that You will never fail me.

Amen.

June 21 St. Aloysius Gonzaga

A good religious complained one day to Our Lord that he was persecuted. He said, “O Lord, what have I done to be treated thus?” Our Lord answered him, “And I, what had I done when I was led to Calvary?” Then the religious understood; he wept, he asked pardon, and dared not complain any more. Worldly people are miserable when they have crosses, and good Christians are miserable when they have none.

-St. John Vianney

Prayer to Grow in Grace through Sorrows

Most holy Virgin and Mother, your soul was pierced by a sword of sorrow in the Passion of your Divine Son, and in His glorious Resurrection you are filled with never-ending joy at His triumph. Obtain for us who call upon you the grace to partake in the trials of the Church and the sorrows of the Pope so that we may be found worthy to grow in grace and rejoice with them in the consolations for which we pray, in the love and peace of the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.
